There are queues out the door of one of Shanghai’s latest burger attractions, Beef and Liberty, on a Monday night. The restaurant offers two for one burgers on Mondays, as well as cheap craft beer during Happy Hour, so it is not exactly surprising.

The man in charge of the queue, Jason, welcomes customers in with a polite charm that you do not often see from a person at front of house taking names down onto a clipboard. This is not to insult people who carry clipboards, but some restaurant staff look like they would rather use it as a weapon for you daring to turn up and hoping to pay good money for a meal. This is not the case here. Once the less than ten minute wait is over, we are ushered onto the restaurant’s terrace, complete with a table football table and a great view of the city’s skyscrapers at night.

The clientele here ranges from expats boasting about their negotiation skills to young locals looking to try out a new restaurant. The mix of people adds a sense of vibrancy to the place. It is also a point worth making that the music is genuinely cool (it gets a gold star for playing Springsteen), unlike the rest of Shanghai where they seem to be catching up with music from the early 2000s, and not in a good way. Starters include a posh sausage roll, an impressive mix of high-quality pork and fennel. Another good choice is the highly popular chicken strips. The standard of burgers here is excellent – and not just the meat options, for vegetarians there is a very tempting falafel burger. This month’s special is the Lambo, a burger featuring slow-cooked lamb shoulder, radish, coriander and a chipotle mayonnaise. Beef fans should opt for the bacon cheese.

This rooftop bar and eatery is very popular in Shanghai for good reason. It sits on the 52nd floor of the glamorous Ritz Carlton hotel in the centre of the city, opposite a long road of historic buildings and skyscrapers called The Bund. People will often queue to see the view here, but thankfully on a night with torrential rain it is not quite as busy as normal. While you can just enjoy cocktails here (reasonably priced considering the view from around £13.00), the Japanese, Thai and Malaysian food are definitely worth tasting. A large sharing plate of sushi including tuna, salmon, scallops and langoustine is wonderfully fresh and the tuna melts away on first bite. Next move on to Thai food with fishcakes paired well with a hot and sweet chilli sauce and a beef salad pepped up with coriander and more chilli. Finally, if you ever need a cure for a cold after getting drenched in Shanghai’s rain (apparently very rare for this time of the year, much to my disappointment), opt for the Malaysian curry noodle soup. It is warming and the extra chilli will help get rid of any ailments. The view from the bar cannot be beaten in Shanghai and the food is some of the city’s best.
