Ready to take advantage of the bike lanes and trails in and around San Marcos? Whether you're looking to log a few miles for fun or you want to take on an epic adventure, here are 5 road biking rides to explore.

Route 1#-Double Peak Trail from Discovery Lake
This is a very popular area for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, and generally considered a moderately challenging route, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.

This trail starts at Lakeview Park and takes you down to Double Peak Park. It is a wide trail with beautiful views. There are several steep sections.

There are 2 designated accessible spaces in the paved parking lot off of Buckhorn Avenue at the north end of the trail. Both of them are van-accessible with striped access aisles. The trail surface is paved asphalt, gravel, or a natural surface (dirt, rocks). It is typically at least 8 feet wide.

The most accessible portion of the trail is the paved portion in the first about 0.7 miles when going south. The majority of the trail is estimated to be in the moderately steep (5-8%) grade category but there are steeper sections at about 0.2, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0-1.3, 1.6-1.9, and 2.6-2.9 miles when going clockwise. Pedalling technique is important, but moutain ebike especially magicycle will help with uphill riding.

Trail goers using wheelchairs/mobility equipment or strollers may need assistance along this entire route due to the consistent sections above a 5% grade (especially if using manual equipment).

Route 2#-Abeja Loop Trail
This three-mile loop is renowned for its stunning vistas of the Santa Fe Hills. However, while it may be one of the most scenic biking trails, riders have to work for the view.

Though this trail is rated as moderate for mountain biking, the steep elevation and unpaved, rocky paths are not for the novice biker. This is one of the best bike trails in San Marcos for experienced mountain bikers who are looking for a quick but intense ride.

Route 3#- Inland Rail Trail
Inland Rail Trail is a 5.3 miles point-to-point trail located near San Marcos, from Palomar College to Eduardo's Produce and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking, running, and road biking and is accessible year-round.

Route 4#- Mule Deer and Fire Trail Loop
Mule Deer and Fire Trail Loop is a 7.2 kilometer moderately trafficked loop trail located near San Marcos, California that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.

Most of the trails are a good (but generic) workout, but the initial loop around the east side of Denk (Copper Creek) is always a nice, cool, shady riparian stroll. The initial ascent up the northeast side of the hill starts the blood flowing and gets the body ready for the loops. Starting/ending point is an easy, shady parking area along Camino Junipero.
